These bigots!
Published May 31st, 2007Statistics is a bitch. Take, for example, the fact that statistically I only have one relative per 1000 square miles in India. But all that is completely thrown off when I go to my town. In my hometown, my relatives are more densely populated than dust mites. Every time I step outside, i am bound to meet at least one of them. I mean my relatives, not dust mites.
On my last visit, this relative of mine sneaked up on me on the street. To avoid this person I wouldn’t hesitate to jump into the sewer overrun by the pigs, whose company I would probably enjoy more. But he didn’t give me a chance. Our conversation ended like this:
He: I heard that Indians are discriminated against in the US, is that true? The white people treat us like second-grade citizens?
Me: I don’t know about rest of the US but it is not true about where I live. In fact, white people are the minority in Bay Area and people often joke that they are the second grade citizens there.
He: People of that country don’t understand what great country we come from. They don’t understand the value of our culture. Even a dirty Negro thinks he is better than us.
I stood there with my mouth open. I didn’t know where to begin to correct him. I politely informed him that “Negro” is a politically incorrect term and that implying blacks are a “lesser” race than us is infuriating. I regret that I didn’t quite know how to tell him he was the biggest racist I ever met and he personally is “lesser” than the pigs I referred to earlier.

I think there isn’t a necessity to regret!!
You would have just wasted your time if you had tried to explain..
Sometimes silence is golden. .
I would give the benefit of doubt to your relative. It’s quite obvious he’s never been to the US, so how is he to know that ‘negro’ is a politically incorrect term?
As for implying that africans are an inferior race, I have met many highly educated, well travelled americans and europeans who have the same opinion. In fact a lot of ‘my country/culture is the greatest, everything else is inferior’ bullshit comes from america. Not that it exonerates your relative, but a LOT of people around the world have similar opinions, there is just no point in blaming your relative alone
I think his statements about ignorance of Indian culture are fairly true. How many people outside India have any idea about how ancient, vast and rich India’s heritage is? For most westerners India is just a land of poor cow-worshipping hindoos and starving kids
well, talking about racists…nobody thinks twice before calling African americans ‘negro’,they dont seem to be finding it incorrect.I get so many people telling me to stay away from ‘negros’!! I guess these people have a so called ‘brain’ missing in their heads
Great culture??!!! Where women molested, beaten, burned, humiliated and raped on a regular basis everyday.Kids are abused.Men and women are discriminated bcos of their caste and wealth or rather lack of it status.
Blacks are far better than us and we are far better treated here than there!!!!
Somebody needs some enlightenment
I relate to what you felt. Its not just Negros. I have heard them use Chinks and Japs too.
I don’t hesitate to tell people its not a nice term to use - they just may be ignorant. Bollywood portrayals of non Caucasian foreigners are less than flattering.
People forget colonial literature used the term darkie to refer to “natives”.
gg
so finally ur back! Ive hit the century bro [wink wink]
i hate these weirdos and i never cease to give them a piece of my mind !
A racist remark indeed!!!!!
TDNA, thoughtful post! Right on the spot,It shouldn’t be tolerated, however, I do find one racist comment had indeed given way to more of racism;) Be it an Indian or American black or white…..no one has the right to believe they are better than anyone else.No culture is above the other, each have their own merits and De-merits .
Indian culture preaches Tolerance with excption to few narrow minded section of people who don’t seem to practice. It’s all about being more openmided and free spirited beings without sounding to be hypocrites condoning the land we are born into….
Thanks for visiting my blog.
Blogs like yours are the ones which provide the true insipration for mine…
Great writing Sir.
It’s not just your relatives, dahling. It’s half this country. Political correctness doesn’t figure in our lexicon. We just shoot our mouths off. That’s all there is to it. After all, we’re the ones with the “sooperior kuhlchur”, remember?
If we were politically correct lot, my blog would be boring
On the other hand, most people everywhere suffer from the “My culture is better” delusion. And as I would say for all those Americans that have the “dirty country with cows on the road” image there are enough Indians where America is a land of free sex, no family values. Each is flawed.
For security reasons I have changed my blog url .
In case u have link on ur page ! Pls alter it accordingly . You may continue enjoying the same unadulterated fun in http://whackyeyez.blogspot.com/
Indians has never been ‘polically correct’ unless one is looking for a career in politics. Also, such comments about Blacks is more driven by our ‘fair and lovely’ culture than it is about race.
I wonder how these perceptions are even built, based on what? Have they been here, or seen somewhere or somebody tells them so?
ScRiBbLeR:
Sometimes silence is golden
LOL. My fear is I am using that rule too much!
Guhan:
I would give the benefit of doubt to your relative
I agree. I am not bothered by his political incorrectness. It’s just a case of ignorance
no point in blaming your relative alone
There is a point in blaming him. I will blame anybody who holds such views, including my relative. But what I wanted to point out was the irony that he is cribbing about whites thinking we are inferior at the same time holding similar views towards another race!
How many people outside India have any idea about how ancient…
Not many people do. But here is the deal. They don’t care. Why should they? Do we, Indians, bother to learn about other cultures, say Holland or Ethiopia? They do have a rich culture, don’t they? But we don’t care about their culture, do we? At the same time we expect everybody in the world to be awed by our culture? Why? Because we strongly believe our is the greatest culture in the world! I would say that’s a wrong view. Ours is a great culture; among the greatest in the world but not the greatest. There is no one greatest culture.
anisha dutt:
.I get so many people telling me to stay away from
Unfortunately, a lot of people in the US tell you the same thing! Blacks are stereotyped that way
Asha:
Where women molested, beaten, burned, humiliated and raped on a regular basis…
You bring up a pretty good point. Our culture definitely has its problems. (I am sure somebody will come along and tell me that these things are not a part of our culture but just a recent anomaly). We are like any other culture. There are great things about us and bad things. We can’t claim to be better than anybody else. On that note, we may have had the greatest culture in the world at some point but in the current day our “culture” is in a sorry state, as you pointed out!
Sudipta Chatterjee:
Somebody needs some enlightenment
Unfortunately, I only gave him a partial enlightenment
GG:
Bollywood portrayals of non Caucasian foreigners are less than flattering
Excellent point! In most Hindi movies, Americans are shown as unscrupulous drunks who go after any woman! And of course, blacks are always bad people!

Ive hit the century bro [wink wink]
LOL
I hope to be more regular
Lera:
being more openmided and free spirited beings without sounding to be hypocrites condoning the land we are born into
I agree. It’s about respecting our culture and respecting every other culture and race!

Great writing Sir
Same to you. Your most recent post was hilarious!
OrangeJammies:
just shoot our mouths off
That we definitely do. But we expect everybody else to respect us
we’re the ones with the “sooperior kuhlchur”, remember
Unfortunately, it’s just the pride that remained. Most of us don’t live up to it
Sakshi:
If we were politically correct lot, my blog would be boring
LOL, that’s true too. May be I should, for the love of my blog, root for more political incorrectness
Each is flawed
True. But the funny part is, if either hears about the other’s opinion, they are enraged. “HOW DARE YOU SAY TTHAT ABOUT MY CULTURE, THE GREATEST CULTURE… BLAH”
Mahathma:
For security reasons
LOL. Why, are you posting your passwords in the blog
Shantanu:
fair and lovely culture
Interesting point. Is it possible that our scorn towards blacks is partly generated because our “lower castes” look like that a bit?
unless one is looking for a career in politics
Lol. Our politicians are not politically incorrect but just employ incorrect politics
Pallavi:
I wonder how these perceptions are even built
A moment ago I just theorized that it may be because our “lower castes” are darker
You know what surprises me, is that we have to teach ourselves to be nice to people from other races, and that the gradient of respect from dark to fair seems to be programmed into the species in some way.
Well, you did the best thing not diggin too much into it with your relative guy…Been there tried that., Believe me, its shockingly surprising how strong their opinions are, as if they’ve experienced it first hand! I must say you are lucky, ’cause its just a relative…sometimes people you really cant avoind have the same opinions and I just blank out when I hear some coments from them! This whole generalization based on culture/race sucks!
The comment doesn’t surprise me the least bit… what shocks me more is when so-called “well educated, well informed folks” pass generalised bigoted remarks against another race and culture… and this is true of anyone anywhere in the world. only wish the Indian pc movement would catch up with the booming economy at least!
Sounds like it’s more ignorance than malice, but who knows? I would probably have gently pointed out that he cannot expect first class citizen treatment unless he is willing to give it to others.
“Americans are shown as unscrupulous drunks who go after any woman!”
HEY! I resemble that remark!
Yes, unfortunately true. Recently I read an article in the paper (been meaning to do a post on it one of these days, lets see) about “Indians being discriminated in the skies” about how Indians are treated with less respect than westerners while flying international.
I thought about all the 100s of times I’ve almost wished to deny my Indianess when I’ve seen the way some Indians behave with the flight crew & in the flight.
To demand respect, respect must first be given.
And for the record, in case I don’t end up writing the post, I’ve never been discriminated in the air, as I’m sure no respectful Indian has.
geez…. I typed a long bloomin relpy & it was just gone. And all these others above me, I’m sure they had no problem. Now THAT’s discrimination
I just wanted to say that I like those cute cute icons at the end of every post
first I thought they were flags of different countries (dont ask me why) but then the tool-tips told me what they actually are. Pity I dont subscribe to any of those!
racist…. hmm… well most of the indians are.. if not against people from other country then against themselves. notrhies…chinkies..ghats…tams…gults..and the list is endless.
As usual..nice post

wow man… you got a huge following for your blog. and I should add that you write well… lots of funny stuff…
a very right action..silence is the hardest argument to refute..anyways it seems that guy was already opinionated…its better to b quit then hit ur head on a empty vessel which will just make noise nevertheless
How Do We Know :
gradient of respect
Very interesting coinage!
seems to be programmed into the species
Ya! I need to find out why it is that way. Is there an evolutionary reason for this!?
Isis:
Oh, do you konw that black girls are just waiting for Indians to trap them and marry them? One of my aunts warned me
shilpa:
Indian pc movement
I guess it has to start from respecting all races and castes of India before we consider other races!
mosilager:
I do think it’s ignorance. But the reason I mentioned it is because the same guy who thought it was wrong of whites to discriminate was discriminating in the next sentence!
Alan:
HEY! I resemble that remark!
ROFL! Of course you do! You also speak a bit of Hindi with some accent like those “gora” characters in Hindi movies
Priya:
I thought they were flags
hahah! Flags huh? Flags of countries I am banned from?
Thanks for visiting this blog. Hope you enjoyed your stay.
Cinamon:
Ya, you are right. We have so many prejudices against the groups within the country, it is too much expect us to be non-judge mental towards other races. You have surprisingly good observation for a Northie
As usual..nice post
Thank you!

Nah. If you really observe, most people who come by are the friends I made in the blogworld.
lots of funny stuff
Cant ask for a better compliment! Thank you very much
Dream Catcher:

You put it quite well. If I started arguing with the guy, he would’ve made more racial comments and not change any of his ideas anyway!
Melody:
Yep! I agree about the flights. If you were in the bay area, there will be more occasions you would want to shout, “that guy does not represent India!” I see people who are very rude to others and don’t follow the norms that are well-established in this country. I fear that we are bringing discrimination upon ourselves!
Hi..fallen in love with ur place..
the template and content is too good
have linked ya
Good stuff - as usual Twisted! The questions…o the non-stop questions about life in the US…..
oh gosh! sometimes i think indians are more discriminatory than everyone else!
we’re so hung up on colour, it’s ridiculous.
indians in the US tell me about their dislike for latinos and african americans all the time.
aarrgh!
TD, Oh so now i have become a northie is it? Well mr non tam (i wanted to use the G word but my manners got the better of me) am part tam as well.

Have read almost all your posts and I like ur style of writing. And more than anything I am happy that there are gult people who are smart as opposed to my age old belief.
Hello:)
I reached here via Sudipta’s blog.
Re this posting..
Yes, sometimes silence is the best weapon. Those are the times when you have to simply give up when it comes to putting some sense into the minds of such bigots.
No one culture is superior than the other. And for those who feel inferior in any way, remember, nobody can make you feel inferior unless you allow them to.
You have an interesting blog. My first visit here. Will surely come back for more
http://indicaspecies.blogspot.com/
Hey TDNA, your blog is hilarious. You have an amzing sense of rumor…sorry….humor.
The more I am reading thru it the more I am laughing out. Man where do you get this from?
Anyways…about this post, I think that the word Negro is not a politically incorrect term. It is the name of a race. Now “nigger” is a weofully-erverythingly incorrect word. But negro is the just the name of the black race. Samething like Caucasian, or Aryan, or Mongol et al.
What say?
