Pyramid of friendship

For engineers like me who live in North California, Fry’s Electronics store is equivalent of a place of worship. We go there every week, pay our respects and part with some money. One weekend at Fry’s I was examining some ultra powerful headphones that are sure to make you deaf in minutes. I noticed a pretty Indian woman walking into the same aisle. I stared at her for appropriate amount of time and went right back to figuring out the fastest way to become deaf.

After a minute, she walked right up to me with a box of “Noise canceling Headphones” and asked me, “Do you know what these headphones do?”

I was surprised. It was clearly written on the box what they do, complete with the picture of a goofy looking guy on an airplane sporting the said headphones, in a desperate attempt to hint at where that gadget can be used. But no, she had to come and ask me. Is she flirting with me? Ooh, la la.

I pretty much read off of the box what the purpose of the headphones was. As she was thanking me, an Indian guy joined us and was introduced as her husband. After she passed on the knowledge I imparted to her, he asked me a couple of more questions and drowned me in praise, “Wow! You know so much about headphones! Are you into professional audio?” Is he trying to flirt with me? I am all confused now.

They introduced themselves enthusiastically, told me they were new in the area and asked everything about me. She even asked, “Where is your wife?” Hmm. What is going on here? Do they belong to the rumored Indian wife swapping club?

But we must give people the benefit of doubt. They could just be extremely nice people looking for friends in a new area. In a way I was happy that there are still outgoing and friendly people out there. That happiness lasted only until I asked him what he did for a living. Like a bucket of cold water, he told me, “I work for so and so company. And I also have my own e-commerce business.”

That, ladies and gentlemen, is a clear sign of an Amway guy. At least one mystery solved. Nobody was trying to flirt.

In case you don’t know what Amway is, it is a pyramid scheme, followers of which believe that it will make them rich and help them attain nirvana. They live the rest of their lives like leeches pestering people to sign up for their cult. (I don’t mean to say leeches pester people to sign up for cults. Leeches have a little more dignity than that.)

Rest of the story was simple and pretty much a routine for me. I gave him my phone number. He called me in two days. I gave him an hour long lecture.

Because of the way they operate, I now look askance at every unknown Indian who talks to me. There is always this nagging suspicion that this guy could turn out to be Amway.

On a side note, a fellow blogger recently moved into this area. We never met but he and I chatted on G-Talk. One day we decided to meet for coffee. Before we closed the chat, he cautiously asked me, “You are not Amway or anything, are you?”

lol! even my MAID is being pestered by her friends to join Amway.. the poor lady asked me what REALLY the whole amway majra was and decided it wasn’t worth the bucks that she’d have to first pay as ‘deposit’ or some such.

Jeez Louise, the sudden burst in the number of posts on Amway is really astonishing. What are those Amway people up to? A conspiracy to take over the world? Hmm…

  5. 5 Anonymous

    Ok…Now I really didnt know abt Amway…

  6. 6 Calabar Gal

I have no idea what ‘Amway’ is. Maybe cos I’m in the UK? But there are some clubs around here that you join for a fee and to get rich - u have to recruit others to join you too. Is that what Amway is about? Will have to check out other posts on Amway and educate myself. (smile)

  7. 7 priya

DNA: I totally agree with you coz it has happened to me 2-3 times when I went for shopping. Amway and also an another name called quickstar. Damn these people. They will come to you as if they are new and ask for directions or shop name and then slowly get your home number and plan to vist few times. They took at us to the meeting and then we knew its like a gospel with all dumb headed ones who stick to one man show. I and my husband never knew of these organizations and was friendly at first. Later when we relaized, we said thanks morons and we like to survive the way we live and not thru such org’s. Next time when people smile at me, I am little caution with desis especially:-))

You know what’s funny, after so many years ere, not once have I been hit with Amway!! I keep hearing and enjoying all the stories of misery and atrocity, but fortunately or not, I have never experienced it.

Am sure with more folks hating it, I don’t get why Amway doesn’t change its business model.

  9. 9 OrangeJammies

Oh I so totally agree with you! We’ve had narrow escapes from “friends” trying to push Amway on us too! There should seriously be a law against those pests!

  10. 10 Sakshi

Damn.. You broke the illusion I had … every other person that chatted with me in the store/online was trying to flirt with me..
Sigh.. I will go and nurse my broken heart. Since you have made me feel this bad, would you mind entertaining some thoughts about say Amway..
Just to help a gal heal..is all I am saying:)

  11. 11 Fuzzylogic

You are hilarious!I like the flair with which you present your blogs. And Amway is a sure way to lose friends. We used to have a good friend who fell victim to this vicious circle and we ended up banishing him from the group because he started exhibiting the typical AMWAY behaviour,do they brainwash these guys seriously? That experience makes me suspect every stranger who tries to get too friendly too soon!

  12. 12 video

Hmm.. maybe next time you can tell them that you have ur own e-commerce business and perhaps they’ll leave u alone?

  13. 13 Jinguchakka

There is a lot of material on the web on this nuisance.

  14. 14 M (tread softly upon)

LOL…everyone here has their own amway story. read one on desipundit too today. What’s up? Is it attack of the amway clones or something? I ran into amway couples on 4 occassions in chicago. It was in Ikea on each occasion and they all used the exact same opening line “you look familiar. where are you from?” They do the ph number thing and give you their card. So after the second time it happened we turned the tables and said we had our own business and gave them the card given by one of the previous amway guys :) ) You should see their faces then :)

  15. 15 Seashells

LOL !!! That lady had Amway or Quickstar written all over her from the very begining… Walmart, Costco and Borders are places where i’ve been cornered before… Stay clear or stay guarded :)

  16. 16 SQT

Arrrgh! Amway! I worked as a waitress in college and we used to get this Amway group in every week. I couldn’t stand those people. If they weren’t trying to sell you something they were rude as heck and lousy tippers.

    Damn you Amway!

  17. 17 noon

Oh yes am sure this post strikes a chord with a lot of people. Firs time when I was a grad stdt a guy I hardly knew called me and told me I seem to have great business sense - I was flattered a little but wondered how he would know anyway! That was my first intro to Amway ways! Recently we were at IKEA looking at some furniture when a Indian couple walked by, tapped my husband (who was facing the furniture) on the shoulder and asked “Are you from India?”! Felt like saying, no we are chinese! We have gone through this a bunch of times - and really like you said - the sad part is now we are afraid to give a friendly look to other Indians and are afraid if they are friendly with us!

  18. 18 Aashun

Those spineless creatures! I have had few experiences with them. One day, we are leasing our apt; a couple showed up and start praising every corner of the apt. After few min, they came to the real business. I felt like shooting them. They just roam around selling their dignity. For the next time, I am going to say that I am already in Amway and way up in the hierarchy.

  19. 19 La vida Loca

these guys can be such a pain on the butt..
on another note wife-swap club seriously?!Thought it was an urban myth :) )

  20. 20 Dr@ma Div@

10 years ago… i had the same kinda torture from my aunt n uncle who were 100% committed into this Amway thingy… it was a nightmare for all of us, u know….

every holiday trip, family get-together, the only thing they gonna talk about is Amway, amway and always amway… arghhh, gimme a break!

i know that amway just hit the indian market.. good luck, guys…

  21. 21 Keshi

LOL hahahaha I couldnt stop laughing!!!!

So she and he wasnt trying to flirt with u and neither were they from the Swapping club LOL great!

yukkkkkkkk those cults! I get so pissed off when they ty to lure me into that crap. Recently one of my friends caught the deadly germ too and was trying to sign me up with her shit. I told her NICELY that Im not interested. Then she tried to invite me for dinner and discuss it with this guy who intro’d it to her. I was sooo angry and I couldnt be NICE anymore so I told her that I HAVE A LIFE. She got the msg this time lol!

**There is always this nagging suspicion that this guy could turn out to be Amway.

u must be walking ard feeling scared of pretty Indian chicks now hahaha! Great post mate!

Excuse me Twisted, could u tell me what these headphones do? My name is Keshi, can u call me some time? :) :)

    Keshi.

  22. 22 si

oh, this post hit home. actually a friend and her husband became amway dealers for a while. i had to stay away from her (tho she did try very hard to “get together” several times). most of her other friends stayed away also. she eventually dropped the amway gig and gradually we’ve all “come back” to being friends again. i like your analogy of insulting leeches by comparing them to amway dealers…

(btw, it now says i have a blog but not really. a friend has stopped allowing “just anybody” to comment on his blog so i had to be set up as a blogger. just in case you had to know.)

  23. 23 Vani

Ah, those dreaded “e-business” Amway guys! My husband was approached by one on a subway train. His line was “Oh, I’ve been meaning to read that book for a long time now!”. “That book” that hubby had in hand was an obscure book that no one would have heard of, let alone wait to read!

Anyway, great post, as always! Now even if someone flirts with you, you’ll always be wondering if he/she’s Amway! lol! :)

  24. 24 Darshni

Enough already! you’re the Indian remedy for the Wayanes brothers….for god sakes make a show already! : )
We need a desi american comedy show … and you just seem to be right for the part.

  25. 25 OrangeJammies

@Drama Diva: Actually, Amway’s been around in India for at least 8 years now, if not more. Long enough for us to learn ways to avoid its people…lol!
We actually had friends relocate from Sydney to Bombay to break into the Indian market….they’re diamond members or some crap like that…and needless to say, not our friends anymore…lol!

  26. 26 Jayashree

I too have run into the “friendly entrepreneur” who took my phone number and called the very next day to ask if he and his wife could pay us a visit. I said I was busy. The next time he called I pretended I couldn’t hear him…just kept yelling HELLO real loud over and over again. That put an end to it…..I think!

  27. 27 NZ

Good one !! Reminded me of when we were first approached by one of these Amway couples ( not desi though), even invited themselves for a cuppa at our place! Man, they don’t take a polite ‘no’ for an answer- even took us to the local Amway warehouse and tried to convince us to buy their ‘utmost superior quality’ stuff, for example, the toothpaste for $20!! Couldn’t explain it to me when I asked that when I can get the best, internationally known branded tooth paste for under $5 in the supermarket then Y would I buy probably the same quality for 20 bucks? or a Amway lipstick for $120 when I can buy even an Elizabeth Arden for approx $50 ?? or are they claiming that these products are inferior in quality to their Amway’s ?

They never bothered us after that :-) ))

  28. 28 The Agony Aunt

love the mental picture of leeches trying to sign you up to join their cult :D
    At least they weren’t flirting!

  29. 29 John

Pretty Indian woman.. just when you could have had it.. damn life!!

  30. 30 Liz

HAHA That sucks. Similarly once at Staples some lady asked what time it was. To keep it short, this lead to her wanting me to read a magazine and take a survey online. After dodging phone calls for 2 months, she finally left me alone.

I am a huge fan of Frys too. By time I leave my feet always ache.

  31. 31 my life....

haha, hey dude, i am pretty sure that he (blogger) has encountered some one from Amway…. is Amway a insurance company ? just curious :)

  32. 32 Diligent Candy

lol! whenever people make an effort to talk to me, or smile unnecessarily…they worry me….he he he he! glad u r nt an “amway type” - very impressed with u being an engineer…damn cool ya

  33. 33 Nee

LOL! I thought that this Amway thing had stopped - about 8-9 years ago, it was like every desi you met was trying to get you into Amway, and then I thought the whole thing died a natural death. Guess not…

  34. 34 Sush

I used to think only LIC guys used to do that leech stuff, compared to these Amway, Modicare, and Tupperware, guys.. they are far far better is what I conclude these days :-( ((

  35. 35 Ilaiy

Well “Sir I have a business proposal for you” ..

Hmm Get the hell out of here.. No wonder all my relaxed shopping time is gone .. I cannot stand anyone who speaks to you for a reason .. Life is so short enjoy it …

    ./thanks
    ilaiy

  36. 36 sharda

You are right. And Fry’s electronics is the special place for these Amway guys to roam around. As soon as they they see any Indian they try to mix up like they are so desperate to make friends with you.I always give them the cold shoulder, even though at that moment it seems very rude. But I cant help that!

  37. 37 Shilpa

not been attacked by Amway buggers yet (phew!) so let me just emphathize with your devotion to Fry’s… it is definitely a cool store!! since they don’t have one near DC, whenever i visit my brother in Chicago we make our teerth yatra.

  38. 38 Something to Say

hey I just posted something about this today. You know we should form an association or something “Indians United against Amway predators” or something like that. Do we have a ‘hit on me Amway’ sign on our face? Or maybe - we look like we cud make some money :(

  39. 39 Shreemoyee

I was accosted once this way, I gave them a defunct contact phone number.

  40. 40 Pallavi

hahaha!! Good luck with those idiots! There is one Indian couple who roams arnd here in Safeway collecting fone numbers..

  41. 41 Life Lover

I fell for this one too :( And then over hot coffee at borders just after 10 mins of introductions i was asked the inevitable questions, and i ran never to look back again! from that day on, i can smell an amway type creature from a safe distance ;)

  42. 42 itchingtowrite

a relatibe of mine stopped talking to another one as they refuse to join the cult. a colleauge in office always praises amway products in hop ethat we might buy them.

  43. 43 Alan

Great post as always. I haven’t heard about Amway for close to two decades. Back in the early 80’s a friend called up and said they were having a little get-together. Thinking party and girls, I went. Urghhh! Amway presentation! Needless to say, I didn’t stay very long. Caused a bit of a strain on the friendship, but I’m not one to hold a grudge. Interesting that Amway is suddenly prevalent in the Desi community.

  44. 44 Anonymous

Why did u give him ur phone number??U should be very careful of these kind of people, who pretend to be very friendly, but they actually r devils in disguise…U never know what is there in their mind…….they might be genuinely good people too, but why to take a chance?Specially when u have known them for not more than 10 min…

I guess there is still vast pool of people who don’t know about them. Hopefully a diminishing pool.

By the way, another thing about Amway people is, they don’t go after people who are living in the country for a long time. They figure these people must have known Amway and are not likely targets

    OrangeJammies:

    wife-swap club seriously?!
Ya, I read about it. Also, last time I was in India there was a really badly made undercover TV program (a la Dateline) that investigated and showed some couples trying to pick up other couples. The interesting part is, the TV program tried to portray these swapping couples as villains who are trying to spoil the entire country. In my opinion, if two people have open relationship and happy in it, good for them.

The second I read this line I knew it was an Anway couple who were looking for a Bakra and they found u qualified candidate who thinks the whole gharana is flirting with him:-) or u thought that it was the colonge you were wearing, was attracting everybody:-)

We met couple of people here who acted the same way and now the minute I see a desi couple I try not to look at them;-) Just yesterday hubby & I were talking about this Amway scheme… According to him Amway is old & now people will start bugging you with time share scheme.. so next time when somebody out of the blue try to feed your ego or start telling you aout a vacation place, just run like hell:-))

    Hehe…
Actually I do have some experience. I know someone who got caught up in one of these pyramid schemes. Luckily for him, the stakes were low ($500). Also, I’ve been harrased by one guy who approached me in Barnes and Nobles. He wouldn’t let go of the issue. In the end I said “Give me your card and I’ll think about it” Of-course I threw it away after that.

Ha Ha! and you thought it was your wit and charm!!

This happened to hubby and me a loong time ago. In our case, it was a mixed couple (american guy married to a chinese woman). We got invited to a movie, a picnic and a potluck before we got invited to a mysterious “Meeting”. This was 12 years ago and they didn’t just blurt out the “A” word in the very first meeting in those days. Even sleazeball organizations did things with a little finesse back then, sigh!

    cheers!

Hahaha…my husband and I have made a hobby out of spotting amway-ites. We even give each other the “amway look” when we smell an amway rat (it’s a very distinct and exclusive look, mind you)….in fact there was a time we’d (very deliberately) “ignorantly” play along, and then my husband would come up with this amway-math and get kicks out of convincing him (the ‘he’ did most of the talking/explaining/conning) how you’d soon run out of ppl in the world with that kind of a scheme :-D After that we’d let them talk for a while and then say “so what do you do? we have this e-commerce business…” rofl. Now that we’re REALLY old we just sniff/sight one from a 100 miles and walk in the other direction :-D

But hey nda, you really have an awesome blog going here…and I love the colors, and you’re so humorous & popular…

…so what do you do? If you’re interested, I’d love to talk about this little business I have…. :-|

LOL..i never realised they actually operate that way!!gotta be cautious now.. :O

  60. 60 Vin

  61. 61 Lera

T-DNA, As usual it’s a humourous post about your experiences ,which is something that I do get to enjoy reading them :) happy holidays to you !

  62. 62 Orchid

Don’t even get me started on the Amway thing…….they are like locusts!! at least here in Dallas they have come, seen and conquered….no place is safe anymore ofcourse supermarkets, electronic stores and children’s play areas at the mall still remain their fav spots to rope in innocent victims..but really some months ago I was contemplating on starting an awareness campaign or something because even going to the grocery store had become such an uncomfortable experience..but of late it has died down a bit…maybe someone did start an awareness campaign and tipped them off or something…anyway

When I was visiting India some time ago, there was this uncle. Whenever we met him he used to pop this Herbalife pill and tell us how great that medicine was. He never really asked us to buy it but he tried all indirect hints. I played dumb :)

    mommyof2:
or u thought that it was the colonge you were wearing, was attracting everybody:-)
It’s not the cologne it’s my personal charm.. oh wait.. it’s neither :)

I actually let the Amways hit on me and get my phone number. When they call, I give them a very long lecture. I don’t think it is use but if more people waste their time, they might stop hitting on random people.

start telling you aout a vacation place
    I heard about this too!

    video:
“Give me your card and I’ll think about it”
Must be a novice Amway :) They generally won’t let you go until you give them your number! But good for you, you narrowly escaped it!

    Saffron:
a Ha! and you thought it was your wit and charm!!
Absolutely not! Just the charm ;)

    the “A” word
    LOL

    gauri:
We even give each other the “amway look” when we smell an amway rat
Your whole “amway treatment” is just hilarious! You guys are wicked and it serves them right!

you really have an awesome blog going here
Thank you very much! You are so kind. Or, are you just trying to sell me the Amway :D

I’d love to talk about this little business I have…. :-|
LOL. We should do a blog version of Amway… BlogWay. You need to get 3 people to read somebody else’s blog and so on :D

    Di:
i never realised they actually operate that way
They are actually sneakier than that. What I described is the most simplistic scenario. People got tricked by them pretty badly and lost several hours hearing their nonsense. Ya, we gotta watch out for these guys.

    Vin:
Welcome to the blog! Thanks for the compliments

    Lera:
Thank you. I am glad you enjoyed the reading. Happy holidays to you too!

    Orchid:
I was contemplating on starting an awareness campaign
I seriously thought about it. I thought we should wear “No Amway” badges so that 1. We deter these Amway scum 2. We show to other desis that we are not amway and safe to say hello to.

I am glad that Dallas is seeing less and less of them. Just like locusts, they probably go where there is fresh meat.

  64. 64 Keshi

yeah I was pretty serious but not angry. I told her that it’s all bull shit and for her to dump it. hehehehe.

**Well, if the girl is THAT pretty, I might just join Amway ;)

o cmon b serious! :) :) One thing for sure, u will never find me among the Amways ppl LOL!

    Keshi.

  65. 65 Swapna

Oh gosh… this was one of the first things I heard when I first moved to the bay area - about people coming up (mostly couples) and talking like this … I’ve never experienced it personally - I’m not married and apparently, they only do that to married couples.

  66. 66 Anonymous

Oh PLease God help me!! My boy friend caught this bug, and that is soooo severe that he just waits for someone to cough to prescribe one of Amway’s products. Now he is telling me too to take this up. I said that I will take it from Jan just to run away and now he is counting down the days.. He says things like “I am waiting for you to enter the new phase in life blah blah in Jan” .All our romantic talk is only around that. I have stopped listenting to him. I think i will break up with him soon, if he doesn’t get my subtle hints. OH GOD PLEASE HELP ME!!

  67. 67 freespirit

Screw Amway…..there really is an Indian wife-swapping club!!!Whoa!

  68. 68 Isha Reddy

    hehehehe… rofl

  69. 69 Kalpana

Amway…God… here too the people try to talk the same way so fast to get u into it. N 4 sure, u need to be safe.

  70. 70 Srikanth

Oh yes… I hate this “Amway kind”. I just dont understand, These people made selling a nightmare :)
I wish I could apply the same technique on another Amway guy…

  71. 71 Divya

Hubby and I have been living in Bay Area for abt 2 years now. No wonder we are having a hard time making new Desi friends here. Damn! They have made everyone so suspicious of genuinely friendly people!!

  72. 72 Divya

BTW, nice blog…I am sure I’ll keep visiting this one again and again :)

  73. 73 King Vishy

Can identify with this a lott! I had my own Amway experience just abt a week back.. Maybe I shd blog about it too.. thanks for the inspiration dude :)

I guess she can re-accept sex making it consensual again. Don’t be surprised if you see criminal cases with the following description: “She went to his place at 8:00PM. They had coffee. They had sex from 8:30PM to 8:54PM. He raped her from 8:55PM to 9:01PM. Then she reluctantly agreed to sex. So, technically, he partially raped her from 9:02PM to 9:15PM. They both had dinner.
