That's a pretty neat description of "interruption saree" :) I have seen people with two kilos of keys attached to themselves... as you said, this signifies power I guess :)

<i>My first comment to any of your post ever, went a bit long</i>
Doesn't matter how it starts, a good habit must always be encouraged :D

As a bong, born & brought up withing sarees (literally) i must tell you the about the most serious way of wearing a saree.
It may be called <b>" Saree for the Interruption". </b>
Normally, the eldest widow in the household of a joint family ( mother in law, grand-mother in law, great-great-grand mother in law) wears a saree this way. The saree shall necessarily be white or off white with a very thin black border. The pallu (anchal) is crossed over around the back and it hangs in the front over the shoulder. In summers blouse is normally optional apparel. A key ring containing no less than 65 keys are tied to the end of the pallu. This symbolized the central control mechanism of the household as key’s to every lock in the house could be tied in that pallu. That’s the reason these elderly bong ladies always responds with a “key holo?” to everything.
These white saree clad women, are found to intervene every attempt to violate the rules of the house, stealing attempt of pickles from the kitchen, trying to play peek-a boo with the neighborhood girl or trying to kiss one’s wife on mid- afternoon.

Traditionally, these sarees are washed after single activity- waking up, bath, cooking etc.

Unfortunately, with the great great grandmothers this particular way is also disappearing fast.

My first comment to any of your post ever, went a bit long. Saari for that.

Cheers!

This was all too fabulous to read! The capri-sari wearers should be shunned. They're not meant to be worn like that! This post makes me want to hop onto a plane, head to India, buy myself more than enough saris, and maybe.. just maybe visit some family members (sadly, I'm American-born =[ ).

It shocks me at how many of these commenters haven't heard of the Googlers. People (such as myself) who weren't taught the art of sari-wearing would be the ones in need of the tutorials. It looks crazy-complicating. =/
