Outrageous advertisement
Published July 17th, 2006You can’t even blow your nose without offending somebody these days. It looks like people are just waiting for somebody to say something remotely related to them so they can get all upset.
So when I saw this great UNICEF advertisement I was thinking, while it is an innocuous advertisement, somebody will find something to complain about it. I tried to imagine how many groups/races/religions can think of something objectionable in this ad. Here is my list. Feel free to add your own.
- The kid is black and the family is white. It has the implication that black kids should seek white family. It’s offensive to African Americans
- It depicts a man and a woman as family. It’s offensive to gays and lesbians
- What the woman is wearing looks remotely like fur. PETA will have something to say about that.
- The way the kid is looking at the man symbolizes “looking up to father”. Feminists will be offended because it’s belittling woman’s role in the family.
- There is only one woman. Offensive to Mormans
- The man and woman are not wearing wedding rings, indicating that they are a “family” out of wedlock. Offensive to the conservative Catholics.
- There is no Asian representation. Offensive to Asians.
- The woman is not wearing a burka. Offensive to half the muslim nations.
- The woman is showing some skin. Offensive to the other half.
- The woman is barefoot. Good. But she is neither in the kitchen nor pregnant. Very offensive to Republicans.
- It’s offensive to some Indians. I mean, we are a billion people and it’s got to be offensive to some minority.

[+] Two girls scouts are protesting girl scout cookies because they say they are endangering some species. If you looked at the nutrition information of the cookies they sell, you would agree that one of the endangered species is mankind. [0 comments]
[+] According to this news item the definition of rape has been widened. If a woman refuses sex in the middle of the act, the rest of the act is considered rape. I guess she can re-accept sex making it consensual again. Don’t be surprised if you see criminal cases with the following description: “She went to his place at 8:00PM. They had coffee. They had sex from 8:30PM to 8:54PM. He raped her from 8:55PM to 9:01PM. Then she reluctantly agreed to sex. So, technically, he partially raped her from 9:02PM to 9:15PM. They both had dinner. Later they had sex after he briefly raped her.” [3 comments]
[+] Pentagon admitted that they accidentally shipped missile parts to Taiwan. Be assured that US is not in the business of selling arms. It might so happen that Taiwan may accidentally ship some money to US in the future. Who knows what accidents happen. [1 comment]
[+] Sarah Jessica Parker is whining that she won the “Unsexiest Woman Alive” award from Maxim readers. If you ask me, she should be quite glad that she didn’t win the “Unsexiest Horse” award. [2 comments]
[+] A new-born rhinoceros in Kenya has been named “Kofi Annan” after the former UN Secretary General. Mr. Annan has been making phone calls since morning to figure out if that is meant as an honor or insult. [5 comments]

very thoughtfull analysis. All the offences you mentioned about I didn’t even think.A great blog.
I couldnt think of even one before looking into your list. Perhaps, I am the most broad-minded around!:)
This post should be read aloud on Jon Stewart’s program.
Offensive to people who aren’t tall and skinny. Puts unrealistic expectations on women to be model-thin, especially post-partum, when they’re already depressed. Leading to a whole host of problems like anorexia, suicide, marital discord, and the subsequent collapse of the entire world economy.
Do you monitor the comments? Coz, I dont see a comment that I left a minute back.
That is a great post, I too observe how PC the whole world is becoming and how people are learning such thin skin for everything these days. At work, I go, get my job done and walk out. Kinda depressing, at times.
anand and ekta: Thanks for blogrolling me
shreemoyee: That’s a great idea. I will start with you
raindrop: I didn’t think of that. You are right, the world does idealize skinny people
